Some jobs get knocked back by everyone. Too small to interest a builder, too specific for a general handyman, or they need something made to fit rather than bought off a shelf. A gate that has to close over a path that isn't level. A screen to hide the bins that suits the house instead of looking like an afterthought. A repair on an older place where the new work has to match what's already there.
Custom work starts with measurements and a discussion of how the space will be used. We agree on the materials, finish and scope before work begins.
What that means in practice is more time on the setup than the build. Old houses aren't square, ground isn't level, and a door opening that measures 820 at the top can be 810 at the bottom. Anything bought in a standard size and forced into a space like that ends up with a gap somewhere, and the gap is what people see.

Older and period homes
Around Penrith, Springwood, Glenbrook and the older Blue Mountains streets there are a lot of houses built well before anything was standardised. Weatherboard cottages, Federation brickwork, timber joinery in profiles you can't buy at a hardware chain.
The difference on these places is that a repair either disappears or announces itself, and there's not much in between. A modern skirting profile next to an original one looks wrong even to someone who couldn't tell you why. So the work is matching profiles, sourcing timber that behaves the same way, and cutting a repair in at a sensible break rather than in the middle of a run.
We'll also tell you where a repair isn't the right answer. Timber that's gone soft through the middle, or a section that's been patched three times already, is often cheaper to replace properly than to keep chasing.
How a custom job gets quoted
Custom work can't be priced off a phone description, and anyone who gives you a firm number without seeing it is guessing.
We come out and measure, talk through what you're after and what it's for, and come back with a written price covering materials and labour, plus what the finish will be. If there are two ways to do it at different prices, you get both. If we think the cheaper option will be fine, we say so instead of quoting the expensive one and hoping.
Where something is unusual and we can't price it accurately, we'll tell you that too and offer to do it on an hourly basis with a cap you agree to first. Better than a padded fixed price that assumes the worst.
Who books this
Common questions
Is there a minimum job size?
No. Small jobs are the point of this service. If travel makes one tiny item uneconomic on its own we'll say so and suggest batching it with anything else on the list.
What if the job needs a licensed trade?
We'll tell you before quoting. Electrical, plumbing, gas and structural work goes to someone licensed. We don't take work we shouldn't be doing, and we'd rather lose the job than do it badly.
Do you design it, or do I need to know what I want?
Either. Plenty of people ring with a problem rather than a solution — the bins look terrible, the side gate doesn't shut, there's nowhere to put anything in the garage. We'll come out, look at it and suggest options. If you already know exactly what you want, even better.
Can you match existing timber and finishes?
Usually. Standard profiles are easy, older profiles sometimes need machining or a close match, and some things aren't obtainable any more. We'll tell you which of those you're dealing with before you commit, along with what the compromise would look like.
How long is the wait?
Depends on what's in front of it and whether materials need ordering. Ring us and we'll give you a real date rather than a vague one. If we can't do it in the timeframe you need, we'll say so.
